Name
Free Play in the Second Language Classroom
Description
This session explores the idea of Free Play in the second language classroom and is based on my Action Research completed at Southern Oregon University. In my study, I found that Free Play (play that is student-directed) produces and increases several important second language acquisition devices, including negotiation of meaning and language play. I also found that students respond positively to free play, despite the fact that, often, secondary students are considered "too old" for play. These concepts, as well as applications of free play within the classroom, will be presented. Although this study was conducted at the secondary level, free play is often applied at the elementary level and thus this session would be applicable K-12.
