Name
Exploring Languages & Cultivating Community
Description
This session is based on the premise that language is inherently human, tied to our cultures, identities, and place. Thereby, policing the language of others is damaging. This session will explore ways to navigate language differences in classrooms with an intent to promote language varieties and build community. We will share talk moves that encourage listening, promote awareness of how teaching moves may silence rather than encourage children and youth, and offer ways to advance writers through classroom talk and written language structures (i.e. sentence patterns and cohesion).
