Name
Reading between the Lines--Teaching Inference to Deepen Students' Comprehension of Texts
Description

In this lively, interactive workshop, Dr. Beverly Ann Chin demonstrates how teaching inference increases students' reading comprehension and engagement with texts. Through her modeling of a guided reading workshop, Dr. Chin shows how to help readers move from literal comprehension ("reading the lines") to inferential comprehension ("reading between the lines"). The inference workshop is especially valuable as students read complex and multicultural texts. Throughout the session, participants engage in discussion, collaboration, and critical/creative thinking as they experience the power and importance of teaching inference.
