Name
1776-2026: A Semiquincentennial Roundtable
Description

The 2023 Montana Legislature established the Montana 250th Commission to help Montanans mark the nation's semiquincentennial in 2026. As part of the enabling legislation, the Commission is tasked with increasing youth proficiency in United States and Montana government and history and in the distinct and unique heritage of American Indians, while also bolstering student participation in the United States civics test and recognizing schools that demonstrate outstanding achievement in these measures. This roundtable discussion will feature three Commission members who are also educators to provide participants with an overview of the Montana 250th Commission’s plans to commemorate U.S., Montana, and Tribal history, efforts to boost civic knowledge and participation (including increasing civic education), an introduction to the Commission’s guiding themes, and an opportunity to discuss the many ways MFPE members can be involved in this work. (Presented by Sen. Shannon O'Brien, former Dean, Missoula College; Marietta Croft, Social Science Teacher, Colstrip High School; and Mike Jetty, Indian Education Specialist, Office of Public Instruction)
