Katy has been a school counselor for nine years in both Gallatin County and on the Flathead Reservation. She is currently in private practice and serving as a Psychology professor at SKC. As a school counselor, she had the opportunity to work with English Learners (now more commonly known as Multilingual Learners) in multiple school districts. When an increase in English Learners arrived in one of her districts, she took on the responsibility of learning about and administering the required screeners and assessments for EL students, provided counseling for them as needed, created and led an EL team, and asked the school board to hire an EL teacher. While some of these tasks fell outside of her typical role as a school counselor, she is proud that she was able to advocate for this population and use her counseling skills to meet their social and emotional needs.
