Montana loves sports of all kinds, and our athletes, from scholastic to pro, have made a huge impact on the playing field - and off. In Volume 1, we'll look at football, basketball, rodeo, baseball, and extreme skiing to see how our athletes have made history, helped develop Montana's future, and offered pride and excitement to our state. Through seven Montana sports biographies (five individuals and two teams/groups), we'll meet a diverse range of men and women including Frank Shively, born in 1873, a member of the Crow Nation, who helped create scholastic football with Pop Warner and was the first Native college football coach, and would go on to serve Chief Plenty Coups in a prominent role; Bobby Brooks Kramer, a legend from the 1930s era of women's rodeo, and Scot Schmidt, an early pro extreme skiier who promoted the sport in Montana and collaborated artistically with both Warren Miller (skiing film producer) and Travis Scott (hip-hop star). The presentation includes separate biographical sketches that can be used as a group or inserted into other lesson plans or activities. Coaches may find these stories helpful for both academic enrichment and student support.
