Name
Teaching Treaties
Description
For secondary teachers (7-12): Why did the U.S. government contiually used treaties? Lakota leader Red Cloud famously observed that the United States made many promises but only kept one: to take the land. This session goes into the structure of Montana treaties and how they show us the culmination of U.S. government methods to errode tribal influence over the land. Free teaching resources and materials will be offered, as well as a paradigm for understanding tribal motivations for signing treaties so that teachers can better lead students down a path of understanding and away from misconceptions or myths.
