Name
Building Financial Literacy: A Hands-On 10-Step Pathway for grades 1-8+
Description

Developing financial literacy is essential for helping students make meaningful connections between mathematics and real-world decision-making. In this interactive session, participants will explore a practical 10-step framework for teaching money concepts from grades 1 through Grade 8+. This approach supports the development of number sense, place value, operations, decimals, fractions, and proportional reasoning along a number line, while strengthening students’ understanding of financial ideas such as interest, tax, and more. Attendees will experience hands-on strategies for introducing coins and skip counting to younger learners, as well as targeted methods to address common gaps in older students as they transition into more formal financial mathematics in high school. Educators will leave with a clear 10-step pathway to develop financial literacy, along with sample videos and classroom-ready tasks that can be used to confidently integrate financial literacy into any mathematics program.
