Anticipation guides are a powerful reading strategy that stimulates students’ curiosity about guiding questions and literary text sets. In this lively workshop, Dr. Beverly Chin demonstrates how anticipation guides promote meaning-making through text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections. When used as a pre-reading strategy, anticipation guides support critical and creative thinking as students respond to and discuss anticipation guides. As students read the text sets, they refer to the anticipation guide to consider whether their responses are—or are not—changing. During post-reading discussions with classmates, students discover authors' diverse perspectives of the statements in the anticipation guide. Anticipation guides deepen students' comprehension of and engagement with the texts and guiding questions. Also, anticipation guides offer topics for writing and debate, ideas for further inquiry, and opportunities for reflecting on our experiences and perspectives of the world.
