Finding Joy in Mathematics
Description
What if joy in mathematics does not come despite struggle, but through it? In this presentation I focus on developing and supporting students' productive dispositions toward mathematics through joy, an emotional and cognitive state that emerges through meaningful engagement with challenging mathematical work. Drawing on students’ reflections and interviews, I will share our findings, the Joyful Practices Framework, that help us understand where joy exists in our classroom practices and why that matters. We will share tasks that allow the audience to reflect on the intersection of joy and struggle in mathematics and how to best support learners!
