As Montana schools move toward proficiency-based learning, the challenge is clear: how do you support flexible pacing, multiple demonstrations of mastery, and differentiation—without losing strong instruction, standards alignment, or teacher autonomy? In this session, Montana Digital Academy Clearinghouse Ambassador Marcella Flannigan will be joined by two math teachers from Glacier High School who are actively implementing Digital Content & Platform (DCP) courses to build a proficiency-based, independent learning pathway within their classrooms. Together, we’ll share what this looks like in practice—not just the “what,” but the “how.” Participants will see how DCP courses, built in Canvas LMS and aligned to Montana standards, provide the instructional backbone for flexible pacing while freeing up teachers for small-group instruction, targeted support, and meaningful student connections. The Glacier High School teachers will walk through their real classroom structures, including how they manage pacing, support reassessment, and maintain accountability in an independent learning environment. Examples from math classrooms will illustrate how students move at different speeds, revisit concepts, and demonstrate mastery in multiple ways—without creating an unmanageable workload for teachers. This session is designed to give educators a clear, realistic picture of how proficiency-based learning can work within a blended model—grounded in real classrooms, real students, and real constraints.
