Name
Thinking of creativity through a fresh lens
Description
The creative process has long been defined through the Bipartite Classification, centered on originality (novelty) and effectiveness (1). With the advent of Generative AI, this sense of originality and effectiveness has been clearly disrupted, especially in the art world: controversy and opaque use have plagued perceptions. Training large language models has been hotly debated among artists, especially given the access to their work without permission. In contrast, the companies training the models use the "fair use" label to avoid legal ramifications. This usage has created an environment of distrust and animosity.
However, with these tools, does it open the door for those who may not have seen themselves as creative individuals to become someone who can explore, dream, and wonder? This session focuses on what art is in a generative AI world and how we redefine it. It looks at models who have been mindful and conscientious in their use of the art to create new art. We will look at how to invite more people into what is possible and help them see where they can be as creative as they want to be.
