The Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Consortium, in collaboration with National History Day, developed this teacher’s guide with instructional steps and strategies to encourage student’s historical thinking. The guide is very thorough including both an overview of the inquiry process and detailed lessons utilizing primary sources. To connect to Montana, we will use the tools in the guide to explore Indian Education for All through primary sources from the Library of Congress. Participants will leave with: • A clear understanding of historical thinkings skills and argumentation • Instructional strategies that integrate primary source work, scaffold analysis, and help students develop historical arguments (a 292-page open access guidebook) • Primary source sets that support IEFA, developed by Dr. Melissa Hibbard, an Interpretive Historian at the Montana Historical Society This session is designed for teachers who want to incorporate more primary sources, student research or historical argumentation.
