The Bad News Brain: Why It’s So Damn Hard to Focus on the Positive and How Educators can Pursue Happiness
Description
We know—from decades of research—that when people are in positive moods, they’re more helpful, healthier, and better problem-solvers. But, because of at least four (and maybe five) big psychological principles, feeling happy and focusing on the positive is very difficult to sustain. In this workshop, John Sommers-Flanagan will describe these four (or five) psychological principles that create our bad news brains. Beginning with the definition of happiness (it’s more than just a good mood), this workshop includes 5 different evidence-based happiness strategies that educators can immediately weave into their lives (and possibly share with their students). Although these strategies will not make stress, anxiety, depression, and suicidality magically disappear, for some educators and students, engaging in happiness practices can be transformative—or at least create small and important positive changes.
