One of the ways that teachers and school counselors learn our jobs is by being supervised by veteran teachers, administrators and school counselors. Supervision as an opportunity for supervisors to influence and shape the education of students and focus on the individual needs of students in the moment. Exchanging feedback between supervisees and supervisors can be a challenging aspect of supervision and can have profound impact on the efficacy of supervision, and the supervision relationship. Despite efforts from supervisors to provide an effective and productive supervision experience, supervisees sometimes question the competency of their supervisors. This presentation will examine the Four Pillars that influence a supervisor’s navigation of competency questioning and provide information about how these pillars can impact the supervision relationship. This presentation is largely based on the findings of a grounded theory study conducted by the presenter. Additional information will be presented from a synthesis of the current available research on competence in supervision and the supervision alliance. Special attention will be given to multicultural considerations and factors in the supervision relationship. Finally, participants will have the opportunity through brief reflection, discussion, and an activity, to identify how these concepts might fit into their own supervision relationships.
