Beyond the Classic Kahoot Quiz: Activating Schemata Through an Inductive Teaching Approach
Description
Kahoot is often used as a fun review tool, but its pedagogical potential extends far beyond recall. This session explores how Kahoot can be redesigned to support an inductive, student-centered approach to language learning in high school classrooms. Rather than presenting rules first, students are exposed to carefully sequenced examples that encourage them to observe patterns, activate prior knowledge (schemata), and construct meaning collaboratively. Using a bottom-up approach, learners engage with targeted questions that prompt them to compare forms, notice differences, and generate their own hypotheses about grammar or vocabulary. Brief and strategic explanations are embedded during the quiz to confirm or refine student thinking without disrupting engagement. This method promotes deeper understanding, increases student autonomy, and transforms Kahoot into a tool for discovery rather than simple review. Participants will experience a model Kahoot activity, reflect on its design, and leave with practical strategies to implement this approach in their own classrooms. By the end of this session, participants will be able to: • Design Kahoot activities that activate students’ prior knowledge (schemata) • Apply an inductive, bottom-up approach to teaching language concepts • Help students identify patterns and formulate rules independently • Integrate brief explanations without interrupting engagement • Use Kahoot as a tool for discovery, not just review
