Name
To Zero, or Not to Zero, That is the Question….
Description
In this session, participants will collaborate in small groups to explore and discuss key considerations for the use of zeros in their grading/scoring systems. Participants will utilize scenarios of student scores to construct viable arguments that advocate both for and against the use of zeros, as well as critique the reasoning of those arguments. They will then investigate the possible impact these arguments might have on the culture and learning environment of the classroom. The ultimate goal of the session will be for participants to professionally reflect on how to improve their grading/scoring systems in ways that contribute and honor student thinking, voice, and status, while ensuring final letter grades are representative of what students know and are able to do within the content of the class without promoting either grade inflation or grade deflation.
