Name
Math Teaching Practices - Episode 4: A Discourse on Discourse
Description
In this session, participants will investigate various aspects of student discourse and how to engage students in effective discourse to advance the mathematical learning of the whole class. Participants will collaborate in small groups to explore in detail NCTM’s Principles to Actions (2014) statement that “Mathematical discourse includes the purposeful exchange of ideas through classroom discussion, as well as through other forms of verbal, visual, and written communication.” Participants will experience and discuss some of the key considerations that are necessary to provide an environment of discourse in a math classroom, such as choosing rich tasks, teaching listening skills, justifying ideas, reasoning and sense making, and ownership of ideas. The goal of the session will be to determine how to build on and honor student thinking, voice, and status while ensuring that the mathematical ideas of the lesson remain prominent in the class discussion.
