Teaching reading and writing skills across diverse classrooms can be both rewarding and challenging. This session explores how CommonLit, a free resource for poetry, fiction, and informational texts can be used as a powerful, flexible tool to support literacy instruction in grades 3–12. The resource includes texts, paired materials, and assessments and can be used online or on paper. Participants will learn practical strategies for selecting texts, scaffolding instruction, and using built-in supports to meet the needs of all learners. Drawing from classroom experience, this session will highlight how to use CommonLit to build students’ ability to analyze complex texts, cite evidence, and develop clear written responses. Participants will explore ways to integrate reading and writing instruction while helping students build confidence and independence. The session will also connect these strategies to assessments, including the MAST.
