Name
Hitting the Powwow Trail
Description
Culturally relevant instruction about powwows can provide students with an immersive interdisciplinary experience that can meet multiple standards for various grade levels and content areas. In addition, instruction about powwows is a great way to reinforce our Essential Understandings Regarding Montana Indians.
OPI has developed several resources for teaching about dancing and singing traditions in Indian Country. We have recently updated our Guide to Understanding and Enjoying Powwows and this guide has explanations of everything you need to know about contemporary powwow celebrations.
We also have numerous video resources that feature Indigenous song keepers sharing different types of songs and the meanings behind them.
Mike will share examples of our IEFA resources and demonstrate how they can be used in the classroom to support teaching and learning about contemporary cultural celebrations. All our resources are available for free on our IEFA website.
