Name
Montana’s 1972 Constitution, the Last Best Constitution
Description
Montana’s Constitution is the Last Best Constitution! Written in 1972 by 100 citizen delegates, including 19 women, Montana’s Constitution is unique among states, guaranteeing Montanans more rights and privileges than the US Constitution. Join this session to learn more about the historical context of our constitution and its lasting importance in protecting the rights of all Montanans. For example, did you know that our Montana Constitution guarantees us a very strong right-to-know what our government is doing including requirements for open governmental meetings and open public records? Did you know that our Montana Constitution is the only constitution in America that guarantees us the right to participate in our government before decisions are made? Our constitution also guarantees a right to vote, right to bear arms, right to privacy, and a right to equity that is stronger than the US Constitution. Presented by Nancy Leifer, of the Friends of the Montana Constitution, this session is ideal for middle and high school civics educators. Gain facts, stories, and resources you can bring back to your classroom to bring Montana’s Constitution to life.
