MCSS Featured Session: Teaching Voting Rights History with Virtual Exhibits and Digital Sources
Description
The Covid-19 pandemic and campus closure in 2020-2021 prompted me to design a new, online version of my courses in US women's history. Fortunately, the public health crisis coincided with the centennial of the 19th amendment, which granted most American women full voting rights. In commemoration of this historic occasion, voting rights historians produced a wide array of public history projects on voting rights history, including podcasts, virtual exhibits, blog posts, and short films. To utilize these materials in an online environment, I designed new assignments encouraging students to engage thoughtfully and creatively with digitized primary sources as well as with online secondary sources. In this session I will share some of the most useful resources I used and the most successful assignments I designed, many of which could be adapted for K-12 students in face-to-face classrooms.
