With the introduction of Generative Artificial Intelligence, particularly tools like DALL-E and Midjourney, generative digital art has come under scrutiny due to copyright issues, unrealistic imagery, bias, and a general loss of originality and human involvement. However, Generative AI art is not a trend, and it is up to art educators, game designers, studio artists, and others to have meaningful conversations with students about its considerations. It can be a way to encourage critical and creative thinking, find a new way to ask important questions, and explore what art means in society. Generative AI art provides an opportunity to discuss the importance of art and human existence. It also enhances the concept that art is inherently interdisciplinary and that the necessity of creativity is transferable across all disciplines. Generative AI affects every discipline, and creators can be leaders in exploring the question of “what if?” In this session, participants will examine the need to discuss generative AI art in the classroom. They will find ways to continually meet students where they are and help generate the " why " question throughout the session. Session participants will learn about the tools and find new ways to discuss them with students.
