Name
CONNECTIONS TO HOLOCAUST STUDY FOR MIDDLE GRADES
Description
Colleen Clancy Hansen will present Connections to the Holocaust through Noeme Bon’s “Witness” video clip to Hansen’s 2025 historical novel, Eyes Everywhere: Searching for Jewish Children. Noemi told Helena students, teachers, and the community that “some people now say the Holocaust never happened.” The middle-grade novel focuses on factual events to share Noeme’s, “I am a witness presentation. I do not have even a grave to visit them.”
A man in Rosslare, Ireland, asked me if I knew that neutral Dublin, Ireland, was bombed during WW II because there was a Jewish children’s ghetto in Dublin.
Such a ghetto was not found, but Dublin was bombed. My protagonist, Peter, and his sister, Minna, live in the geographical countries, Peter studied in Warsaw before 8 September 1939. The cultural differences for the siblings are exciting in Paris, Lisbon, and finally in Dublin, but they love their Jewish customs and miss their parents deeply as they are targets for the trains.
Middle-school students will read of loss of family, the reliance upon trusted friends of parents, and hope that never ends.
