Name
Sinking Ships with Mathematics
Description
There is something irresistibly dramatic about a sinking ship story. The Titanic, the USS Arizona, the Edmund Fitzgerald are all legendary. Teachers can capitalize on this natural interest while showcasing the predictive power of mathematics by asking a simple question: How many pennies can a toy boat safely carry? And, also, of course: How many pennies will it take to sink the boat? This activity can be scaled up or down for appropriate use in grades 6-12. Come, sink a ship, and leave full of ideas for your classroom.
