Name
Using Contextual Problems to Build Mathematical Understanding
Description
How do we ensure students are really engaging with mathematics in context and making sense of the relationships to mathematics in their world? Come learn alternatives to strategies that only focus on answer-getting and instead learn how to focus on sense-making. Participants will learn to employ numberless word problems, notice and wonder, and 3-Act Tasks in place of strategies that emphasize keywords or procedural following like CUBES (Circle, Underline, Box, Eliminate, Solve). Participants will engage in the practices alongside seeing samples of student work.
