Name
Visualizing Indigenous Histories Through Traditional and Contemporary Arts
Description
Montana’s Indigenous histories are deeply embedded in the visual and oral storytelling traditions of Native artists, both past and present. This session explores how educators and historians can use Indigenous art—traditional and contemporary—to gain deeper insights into the histories, cultures, and perspectives of Montana’s tribal nations.
By applying the critical method of discussing art, participants will learn how to engage with Indigenous visual language, uncovering the stories, symbolism, and histories embedded in these works. Through contemporary Indigenous art and firsthand narratives from Native artists, this session will demonstrate how oral and visual storytelling work together to provide a richer, more nuanced understanding of Indigenous histories.
Attendees will leave with practical strategies for incorporating Indigenous art into their teaching, fostering meaningful discussions, and honoring Native perspectives in historical education. Whether you're an educator, historian, or simply passionate about Indigenous history, this session will provide tools to deepen engagement and amplify Indigenous voices in the classroom and beyond.
