Name
Strengths-Based Suicide Assessment and Intervention
Description
Historically, suicide assessment and intervention has been based on a deficit-based model asking: “What is wrong with you?” New and exciting research suggests that this may not be the only model to assessing risk and developing subsequent interventions; rather, there may be a better option that treats the person as a person and not a list of tics that can be put in a risk-level box. Strengths-based suicide assessment is theoretically grounded in Positive Psychology, flipping the script on de-pathologizing human behavior and the human experience. This approach conceptualizes the client as a whole person, being a systems-perspective to protective factors and supports that can be highlighted and leveraged in assessment and intervention. Participants will benefit from this ‘breath of fresh air’ in energizing a new paradigm to this work, to the advantage of both the client and the clinical/educator supporting them through this process.
