Digging Deep: The Power of Prairie Roots in Ecosystem Health & Growing Their Own Roots: How High School students are sharing their knowledge with elementary students Presenters Bess Hjartarson, science teacher at Cut Bank High School and Dusty Rixford will introduce Prairie Plant Roots and why they are so important to the ecosystem. This presentation explores the often-overlooked but vital role prairie root systems play in maintaining ecological balance. While prairie landscapes may appear simple on the surface, beneath the soil lies a complex and powerful network of roots that sustains biodiversity, improves soil health, stores carbon, and prevents erosion. This presentation will highlight how prairie roots are key players in supporting both natural ecosystems and sustainable agriculture.
