Avoiding Student Overreliance on AI-Generated Answers
Description
When applying AI in education, one important concern for students is an AI overreliance, which can result in reduced development of critical thinking skills, lack of emotional intelligence and absence of personalized connection, compared to interactions with human teachers. To avoid student overreliance on AI-generated answers, it is crucial for teachers to teach learners to critically evaluate all AI outputs, use AI as a tool to assist own thinking rather than a replacement for it, verify information with credible sources, and actively engage in critical thinking to assess the accuracy and relevance of AI-generated content. AI can act as an inspiration for students, to ignite a spark, to generate ideas or even the initial drafts, but it cannot add one’s own real-life insights and perspectives. Equally important is the transparency about AI usage, particularly in academic writing, when utilizing AI-generated narrative without proper citation, can be considered plagiarism and can lead to disciplinary actions. If AI is used to generate content, it is vital to clearly disclose its use to maintain ethical practices.
