This session will take a deep dive into the proposed pieces of legislation HB 471 and SB 299 from the Montana 2025 Legislative Session. First, this session will highlight how we've "gotten here" from the pendulum swing at the federal level to the state's recent educational changes in 2025. Both HB 471 and SB 299 aimed at further promoting parental rights and consequently pushing forward educational censorship agenda targeting LGBTQ+ themes and sub consequently limiting educators' choices in terms of curriculum, material, and content. Even though SB 299 failed, it is unclear if it will return in the future, and with HB 471 passing, the future guidelines for education and communication become muddy. This presentation, while political, hopes to provide insight on how HB 471 may impact future pedagogical choices.
