Speaker Bio
DJ Soikkeli is a high school art educator and graduate researcher dedicated to transforming visual arts classrooms through student-centered, research-informed practices. With over six years of experience teaching at the secondary level, DJ specializes in Choice-Based Art Education (CBAE), creating inclusive studio environments that empower students to engage deeply with media, concepts, and personal voice. Their current capstone research, Coaching from the Sidelines: Scaffolding Student Growth During the Transition to Choice-Based Art Education, explores the intersection of autonomy, scaffolding, and the Studio Habits of Mind to promote both cognitive and creative development.

DJ’s work emphasizes the implementation of evidence-based strategies drawn from constructivist learning theory, self-determination theory, and visual literacy scholarship. Through practical, real-world application of these frameworks, they support fellow educators in making the shift from traditional to choice-based models while maintaining high expectations and meaningful student outcomes. DJ currently teaches Art Foundations, Sculpture, Ceramics, and Photography II at Belgrade High School and is completing their master’s degree through the Art of Education University.
