Whether as a school counselor, teacher, or other member of the student support system, perhaps the most important role an educator can hold is that of advocate. In this session we will discuss an educator’s ability to advocate through a Student Assistance Team. We will explore an ethical, American School Counselor Association-based approach to: • Advocating ethically and effectively for students and their families • Mediating discussion in tense situations • Goal-setting and intervention ideas for students • Supporting teaching staff • Preparing a 504 Plan (and knowing when one might be appropriate) o For additional support regarding the 504 evaluation and creation process, please consider also attending Navigating the Who, What, Where, When, Why (and How) of Student 504 Evaluations and Accommodation Plans • Concluding the Student Assistance Team Process In addition to these objectives, we will cover how to manage or work with a Student Assistance Team. Whether you are ready for a refresher, are wanting to make your procedures more efficient, or are designing a new process entirely, you will leave with ideas and resources to support your program.
