Name
Creating Body Confident Schools Using the Body Kind Curriculum
Description

Weight is the number one reason for bullying in schools with a staggering 77% of adolescents experiencing body image distress. In our appearance-obsessed society body dissatisfaction has been linked to poor academic performance and is a high-risk factor for eating disorders, the incidence of which doubled in adolescent girls between 2020 and 2022. With the advent of social media, we see children at younger and younger ages impacted by the false idea of ideal body size. Kids as young as 3 years old have shown a preference for thin bodies over larger bodies. Body dissatisfaction stems from unrealistic ideas of how we ought to look and is experienced by people across all body types. BeReal USA is a non-profit dedicated to spreading body confidence across the United States. Through evidence-based research and compassion, BeReal seeks to empower adolescents, parents, and educators to create cultural change within their communities around food and bodies. In this session, BodyKind Ambassadors will utilize resources developed by BeReal USA to educate teachers on how body dissatisfaction presents in adolescents, as well as practical tools and strategies they can use to be a catalyst for change in creating a body-inclusive culture within their own school system.
