Educators are increasingly navigating classrooms where student behavior, emotional needs, and learning are deeply interconnected. When students are dysregulated, their brains are not available for learning—yet many classroom responses unintentionally escalate behaviors rather than support regulation. This session, Regulate First, Teach Second, provides educators with practical, trauma-responsive strategies that can be implemented immediately to support student regulation, reduce behavioral disruptions, and increase engagement. Grounded in the science of stress and brain-based learning, participants will explore how regulation impacts attention, behavior, and academic success. Attendees will learn how to recognize signs of dysregulation, respond in ways that de-escalate rather than intensify behaviors, and implement simple, effective regulation strategies within Tier 1 and Tier 2 supports. The session will also highlight how tools such as EMOTE behavioral data and strategies aligned with the PAX Good Behavior Game can be used to proactively support students and strengthen classroom systems. Participants will leave with ready-to-use strategies, classroom tools, and a deeper understanding of how shifting from compliance-based responses to regulation-first practices can transform classroom climate and student outcomes.
