Name
English Learners - More than just Learning Language
Description
English Learners - More than just learning language, this session will focus on the unique socio-emotional needs of multilingual students above and beyond their academic needs. Many multilingual students struggle with mental health issues related to their cultural identity and poverty due to their parents' immigration status, fitting into their new school, building meaningful relationships, and engaging in classes. How do we support their needs? How do we build a relationship with families and students if we don't speak the same language? This session will address these questions while also providing information regarding enrollment requirements, strategies for building their schedules, and meeting their linguistic needs. Participants will learn how to identify ELs/MLs, enroll them, and meet their linguistic/academic needs. Participants will also learn how to build relationships with students and their families even if they don't speak the same language. And lastly, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the struggles students and their families face.
